Research

I’m interested in the interplay between genetic and environmental causes of individual variation in smoking and the risk for nicotine dependence. To explore this topic, I’m using the extensive resources of the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR); including both the longitudinal phenotype database on health, personality and lifestyle (including smoking) and the biological samples collected in the NTR biobank. With the twin and family data we can estimate the heritability of smoking behavior, and we can investigate the interaction between genetic influences and environmental factors. With the biobank data, the association between smoking and DNA-variations, gene-expression patterns and biological markers (like cotinine) can be explored.
